I only wish that were true of Mike. Two years after he had moved to Seattle, Patsy called. She said, “There is no easy way to say this. Mike hanged himself.”

I couldn’t believe it. I just couldn’t absorb what she was saying. Mike would never do that. No matter how “down” he got, he was always positive. Always a smile on his face. His mother continued, “He left a note. He only mentioned two names. His girl friend’s name and yours. He wrote, ‘I’m sorry Marilyn.’”

Several days later she called to say there was going to be a memorial service in two hours. It was a very last minute thing. Could I come? “I’ll be there.” There were only three of us on one side of the aisle. Patsy, one of her friends, and I. On the other side of the aisle were his father, stepmother, stepsister and two or three other people.
